Introduction and Pet Quality

Michael Lockey, Director of Evergreen Acres Bird Sanctuary regards the Sharp-tailed Conure as the highest form of avian life, bar none. Lockey is so ecstatic about this species that he feels that they have the potential to become as popular as Budgerigars and cockatiels. He offers many reasons for this belief: their intelligence, their talking ability (albeit limited to a few words or phrases), their relaxed manner (they are not easily stressed) and their very affectionate nature. Rosemary Low, in fact, deems them to be the most intelligent of all the conure species. But Low hastens to warn of their potential for raucous cacophony, citing their loud voices as their main drawback.

Thomas Arndt defends the Sharp-tailed Conure saying that this so-called loud noise should be forgiven in exchange for the entertainment they provide. However, being forgiving does not make them any quieter! Arndt, therefore cautions that although they only rarely use their piercing voices, the neighbours should be considered when contemplating this conure for an outdoor aviary.
